Thoondil is an android application developed by the Department of Fisheries, TN Govt in collaboration with NCCR, MoES Government of India. This app integrates modern science and technology to assist the fisherman community in Tamil Nadu. It provides near real-time information such as weather forecast, potential fishing zones, high tide, and cyclone alerts. Thoondil aims to address the shore-to-shore needs of the fishing community and act as an effective decision support tool, saving lives during natural disasters. This app covers the entire coastline of Tamil Nadu, spanning 1076 kms, from Pulicat in the Coromandal Coast to Neerody in the West Coast.

The app offers a range of features including a compass that displays cardinal directions, latitude/longitude, speed, and bearing for boat drivers/owners. It also provides weather information published by the Indian meteorological department, including high tides, cyclone alerts, and heavy wind direction. The app also displays potential fishing zones based on sea surface temperature and chlorophyll presence, helping fishermen find areas with abundant fish. Other features include the ability to declare daily fishing trips, add crew information, record past trips, view live boat positions, access offline maps for rescue plans, report incidents, update profiles, and send distress signals in case of emergencies.
